Publisher’s Note

Famous for a decade

This issue marks Famous magazine’s 10th anniversary; our first issue came out in November 1999. And the more I watch the media obsess over the minutia of celebrities’ daily lives, the happier I am that 10 years ago we decided to make a magazine that focuses on movies, and the craft of filmmaking, rather than on whether an actor has gained a couple of pounds or had a public spat with their spouse.

Over those 10 years we’ve delivered hundreds of exclusive interviews with fascinating actors and directors — both established, A-list Hollywood stars and up-and-coming Canadians conquering the movie industry in this country and beyond. We aim to uncover what’s most interesting about those filmmakers’ latest projects, so that you can make up your own mind.

In fact, the concept of people making up their own minds is a big part of our philosophy. We realize that our audience has diverse tastes that cross all genres, and that a movie one person considers a dud is likely on someone else’s Top-10 list. That’s why, in Famous, you may find an interview with pop idol Miley Cyrus just a few pages from a chat with Oscar darling Meryl Streep.

What’s important is our shared love of movies. And, publishing 12 issues a year, with well over a million readers each and every month, we’d like to think we’ve inspired a few new cinephiles.

So a big thank you to the writers and editorial staff who crafted those stories over the years; as well as to our sales and support staff, some of whom spent just a short time here, and others — like our editor Marni Weisz, director of media operations Cathy Prowse and vice president of sales John Tsirlis — who’ve been here from the very start. And a special thanks, as well, to everyone at Cineplex Entertainment.
