MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY

Who’s In It? Frances McDormand, Amy Adams
Who Directed? Bharat Nalluri (The Crow: Salvation)
What’s It About? Set in 1930s London, this period comedy finds dowdy British governess Miss Pettigrew (McDormand) becoming the social secretary to a ditzy American actress (Adams) who can’t decide which of her three lovers to wed. The film, based on a 1938 novel, was all set to be made in 1942 with Billy Burke (Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz) starring as Miss Pettigrew. However, the attack on Pearl Harbor waylaid the making of silly Hollywood comedies, and after the war the project faded from sight.

COLLEGE ROAD TRIP

Who’s In It? Martin Lawrence, Raven-Symoné
Who Directed? Roger Kumble (Just Friends)
What’s It About? An overprotective father (Lawrence) and his teenage daughter (Symoné) get into a load of trouble while on their way to survey Georgetown University.

Who’s In It? Steven Strait, Camilla Belle
Who Directed? Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow)
What’s It About? Angry cavemen in furry underpants take on woolly mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers in this special-effects extravaganza.

THE BANK JOB

Who’s In It? Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows
Who Directed? Roger Donaldson (The World’s Fastest Indian)
What’s It About? In September 1971 thieves dug a tunnel under the safe deposit boxes inside a London bank and walked away with their contents. The criminals were never caught and the British government issued a gag order known as a D Notice, which prohibited any coverage of the heist for the next 35 years. Why the secrecy? The film reveals that the boxes contained scandalous photos involving the Royal Family, hot potatoes the thieves were not expecting to find.

PARANOID PARK

Who’s In It? Gabe Nevins, Taylor Momsen
Who Directed? Gus Van Sant (Last Days)
What’s It About? Director Van Sant used MySpace to cast this drama about a 16-year-old skateboarder (Nevins) implicated in the death of a security guard.

MARRIED LIFE

Who’s In It? Pierce Brosnan, Rachel McAdams
Who Directed? Ira Sachs (Forty Shades of Blue)
What’s It About? Set during the ’40s, this noir-ish drama finds Harry (Chris Cooper) confiding to his pal Richard (Brosnan) that he’s going to murder his wife (Patricia Clarkson) so he can marry his mistress (McAdams).

Who’s In It? Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell
Who Directed? David Gordon Green (Undertow)
What’s It About? The teenage Arthur (Michael Angarano) is attracted to his former babysitter, Annie (Beckinsale). Meanwhile, Annie is having trouble believing her alcoholic ex-husband (Rockwell) has changed his ways, and isn’t so sure he should spend time with their young daughter.

DOOMSDAY

Who’s In It? Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins
Who Directed? Neil Marshall (The Descent)
What’s It About? In 2008, a deadly virus sweeps through the U.K. killing millions. The British government walls off a portion of the country and leaves the infected to die. Fast-forward 25 years to the year 2033, when the virus reappears and a crack team of commandos, led by Eden Sinclair (Mitra), break into the contained area to find survivors, and therefore a cure.

Who Directed? Bill Maher (debut)
What’s It About? When Joleen (Theron) abandons her 11-year-old daughter Tara (AnnaSophie Robb), her brother James (Stahl) is forced to take care of the girl. See Charlize Theron interview.

HORTON HEARS A WHO!

Voices: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell
Who Directed? Jimmy Hayward, Steve Martino
What’s It About? The Dr. Seuss story comes to the big screen with Carrey as the voice of the elephant Horton, who is derided by his fellow pachyderms when he tells them he hears a cry for help coming from the microscopic Whos, who live on a speck of dust. Who Directed? Charles Robert Carner (debut)
What’s It About? Larry the Cable Guy plays a small-town sheriff protecting a whistle-blowing witness on her way to a big-city trial.

Who’s In It? Sean Faris, Djimon Hounsou
Who Directed? Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf)
What’s It About? A rebellious high schooler (Faris) stumbles upon an underground fight club for teens.

What’s It About? Do you think all those J-Horror spirits have Hollywood agents? Maybe they have entourages too. The creepy ghouls star in this remake of the 2004 Thai horror film of the same name that focuses on an American couple honeymooning in Tokyo who discover ghostly images popping up on their photographs.

DRILLBIT TAYLOR

Who’s In It? Owen Wilson, Leslie Mann
Who Directed? Steve Brill (Mr. Deeds)
What’s It About? Three dorky high school freshmen are tormented by the school bully. To protect themselves they hire down-and-out soldier of fortune Drillbit Taylor (Wilson) to act as their bodyguard.

MEET THE BROWNS

Who’s In It? Tyler Perry, Angela Bassett
Who Directed? Tyler Perry (Why Did I Get Married?)
What’s It About? Brenda (Bassett), a single mother of three living in Chicago, travels to Georgia to attend the funeral of the father she never knew. It’s there that she meets her southern relatives the Browns, a clan known for their emotional outbursts and in-your-face antics. Look for writer/director Tyler in the cross-dressing role of Madea and as Uncle Joe.

Who Directed? Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry)
What’s It About? Decorated soldier Brandon King (Phillippe) returns home to Texas after serving his tour of duty. However, when he drops off his gear he’s told he’s being sent back to Iraq via the government’s Stop-Loss policy, so Brandon thinks about hightailing it to Canada. Peirce based some of the film on the experiences of her younger brother, who was wounded while serving in the army.

Who Directed? Craig Mazin (The Specials)
What’s It About? Batman, Superman and the Fantastic Four are just some of the indestructible superheroes spoofed in this satire.

 


RUN, FAT BOY, FUN

Who’s In It? Simon Pegg, Thandie Newton
Who Directed? David Schwimmer (debut)
What’s It About? Five years ago Dennis (Pegg) made the mistake of abandoning his pregnant fiancée (Newton) at the altar. Now he wants her back, and he’ll prove his undying love by putting his sad sack body on the line and running alongside her husband-to-be (Hank Azaria) in the London Marathon. Who’s In It? Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey
Who Directed? Robert Luketic (Monster-in-Law)
What’s It About? This based-on-a-true-story thriller stars Sturgess as mathematical genius and MIT student Ben Campbell, who needs to earn loads of cash in order to stay at school. So Ben agrees to join Professor Rosa’s (Spacey) group of card-counting students, who routinely go to Vegas and win big at the blackjack tables. Their story was first told in the Ben Mezrich book Bringing Down the House.
